I'm not a superstitious person. Well, I won't admit to being one anyway. Maybe it would be more accurate to say that I'm a mildly superstitious person. While I don't have to sit in a certain seat on an airplane to feel safe, or carry a rabbit's foot for luck, I do abide by some other common rules. I'll sometimes touch or knock on wood for fear of jinxing myself. I'll toss a pinch of salt over my shoulder if I spill it. I try to never open an umbrella indoors if I can help it (why would you want to anyways?). I won't walk under ladders without considering the karmic risks. And on those rare occasions when I break a mirror, I'm calculating the seven-year statute of limitations before I've even started picking up the glass. But none of these things are done with any degree of seriousness. For me it is more of a "it couldn't hurt to be safe" kind of feeling. However, one superstition that I am really beginning to believe in is something that seems to have proven itself to me time and again: the 11:11 wish.
This simple superstition is that if you look at a clock and the time reads 11:11 then you should make a wish. I can't remember where I first heard this. It was just one of those things that appeared in my consciousness after enough people mentioned it. Of course I initially dismissed it as irrational. But whenever I would catch the time at 11:11 I'd make a wish just for the fun of it. In the last couple of years I have had an uncanny number of 11:11 wishes come true. So while I am firmly a man of science, my faith in something entirely hokey just seems to grow.
It is curious to me how often I randomly catch that particular time on the clock. I wonder if it only seems that way because the four similar digits make it easier to remember. I also seem to notice 12:18 quite a bit and that is significant for me because it was the day and exact time I was born. I've recently begun to make wishes on that and they seem to have a higher success rate than my old friend 11:11.
I doubt anyone has ever done any legitimate study on wishes coming true. But I suspect it may reveal much about human psychology and the power of wishful thinking. I have read many accounts of people who have managed to "will" certain things to be; like the young boy with a brain tumor who every night imagined little fighter jets in his head, blasting away at his cancer until it was gone, only to find out that the tumor did indeed shrink and become virtually undetectable. There are no doubt many reasonable scientific explanations that could more plausibly prove how something like this was possible. But in terms of the internal realm of the human body, there is perhaps much we don't know about the power of the mind over the body's systems.
Most of my 11:11 wishes are external. I'd like certain things to happen. I'd like particular problems to be resolved. In this area too, there is perhaps a hidden power in unconsciously setting goals and making things happen. It is probably holdover elements of the pagan tendencies of our ancestors that make us think that there is some kind of mystical force behind certain events. Our brains just feel comfortable believing it.
Having the benefit of no scientific study, I can say only that much of what I have learned about the metrics of the 11:11 wish principle is based on anecdotal evidence. But I believe the following factors to have a positive influence on the outcome of such wishes...
The Rules:
First, seeing 11:11 must be spontaneous. One cannot see 11:08 on the clock and then wait for 11:11 to appear. Seeing it on a digital clock seems to have more power than an analog. It works with either a.m. or p.m. but the latter seems to have a bit more strength. The wish must be made right away and can be either verbalized or simply a part of one's inner monologue. If the wish is made on a room in which multiple clocks are in view, one clock must be made the focus of your wish. What you wish for must not only be fairly specific but within the realm of 11:11 possibility. You cannot think "I wish for world peace" and expect it to happen. However, you might wish to receive a financial windfall within the next two months and then have it happen.
Of course, once you spontaneously look at your digital clock and see it is on 11:11 you must immediately look away while you are making your wish. If you look back at it, or any other clock, before it has turned to 11:12 then the wish is blown. Likewise, after looking away and making your wish you cannot count down the seconds. You must wait for what you determine to be a reasonable amount of time before looking back at the same clock to see the time has changed. Compound wishes tend to be a bit problematic. If you were to make a wish to "Meet a beautiful, smart, redhead who is from Michigan and has green eyes and plays the violin" you might get some or one of those things.
My pseudo research in this area continues. I could itemize all of the 11:11 wishes that have come true in the past two years. But in the same way that ill-matched pylon crystals on the 70's TV show "Land of the Lost" could have negative consequences if matched in the wrong combination, I fear that to reveal too much might skew the system. I'm already probably giving away too much. I'm sure I've already jinxed myself. But I'm not superstitious. I promise. Really.
Okay - for some reason - I really love this one. We need to talk about this one. Don't let me forget!

hey, i love this article, i hope the thing with the 11:11 works, :) , i 1st heard about this in a movie...nice i hope it really works, couz i like believing in magic

I believe in 11:11 Wishes too, in august last year when I just had a brand new mobile phone I'd never been more happy, but I felt so sad at the same time cause I didn't have anyone special to call me, I looked at the clock on my phone and it showed 11:11.
I wished for someone to call me, as simple as that.
A few days later I met my boyfriend (now my ex) and he called me all day everyday. untill it got boring! lol

I feel like I've had so many wishes come true. I feel like my current girlfriend was a successful 11:11 wish!
Posted by: Christopher Boffoli | July 10, 2006 at 02:50 PM
my friends started this in latin class in the 7th grade i dont know why we started it but we thought it would be fun and i have done it ever since but our rules werent as strict you cant make two wishes in a day right?
Posted by: ryan mcguigan | September 16, 2006 at 09:31 PM
I'm Ryan's friend, and I think you should be allowed as many wishes as you can as long as you look up when it's 11:12 and no 11:13.
Posted by: Eric Moe | September 16, 2006 at 09:34 PM
i think you can wish as many times as you want in a minute but if you make multiple wishes then the odds of them happening will decrease because of the wishes sharing the minute but if you want decreased odds go ahead and wish away
Posted by: ryan mcguigan | September 16, 2006 at 09:38 PM
odds in wishing aren't like normal math, they're all equal if you do it right
Posted by: Eric Moe | September 16, 2006 at 09:45 PM
each wish should deserve its own minute otherwise it isnt worth wishing
Posted by: ryan mcguigan | September 16, 2006 at 09:50 PM
It takes skill to wish more than once, so it's like your reward, and it keeps you focused so you don't start counting seconds- which is illegal as stated above.
Posted by: Eric Moe | September 16, 2006 at 09:52 PM
if you need a crutch (making multiple wishes to make sure you dont count seconds) to make wishes maybe you arent skilled enough to be making wishes in the first place
Posted by: ryan mcguigan | September 16, 2006 at 09:55 PM
Maybe your not skilled enough to do multiple wishes cause you're too slow at making them, and i'm so good that i might have to move to 3 and 4 wpm (wishes per minute). Do you see????
Posted by: Eric Moe | September 16, 2006 at 09:57 PM
alright eric moe im sorry, i can see that wish making is a very touchy subject with you and obviously im not as good at wish making as you are once again im sorry
Posted by: ryan mcguigan | September 16, 2006 at 10:00 PM
It's ok I forgive you. It's truley ok, some people just have the skill. jk jk
This is the last one, this is dumb
Posted by: Eric Moe | September 16, 2006 at 10:02 PM
I always see that time on the clock, and it always strikes me to make a wish. However, I have stopped believing that this works. Or maybe it is because i am using it purely out of selfish reasons, but none of the things i wished for came true (No, I was not wishing for Brad Pitt or any other oily variety beau hunk.)
If it works for you, keep wishing. Somehow you got all the luck.
Posted by: Jenn | October 05, 2006 at 02:13 PM
Wow! I think it'll work.. We just have to wait, and see if it does. If it doesn't maybe I'm doing something wrong! =P....Have a great rest of the day!
Posted by: Maria | December 21, 2006 at 05:21 PM
This is extremely significant to me because i was born at 11:11 pm. I always look at the clock spontaneously at that time...
Posted by: Marisa | January 15, 2007 at 07:33 PM
Last night I was lying in bed when I felt this sudden urge to look at the clock. So I rolled over and low and behold... it was 11:11. So I quickly closed my eyes and made a wish... unfortunetly after waiting a while and I looked back up it was still 11:11. I must've looked at it when it just turned.. but oh well... I still think there might be a chance it'll come true.

Actually, there has been a bit of scientific research going into the subject of wish-making. The idea of seeing 1111 or 11:11, making a wish – and the probability of that wish coming true is related to the idea of synchronicity.
Synchronicity, simply put, is the occurrence of two or more events that make since logically, but cannot be explained. A real life example of this event:
“During production of the The Wizard of Oz, a coat purchased from a second-hand store for the costume of Professor Marvel was later discovered to have belonged to L. Frank Baum, author of the original children's book upon which the film is based.”
There has been quite a bit of research done on the idea of synchronicity, mostly by the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research Lab. They said that there is a small, though measurable link between human thought and the pattern in which events occur in nature. The PEAR lab will be closing at the end of February 2007, after 28 years of research.
What are some of their finds?
One of the more interesting finds disputes perhaps the greatest superstition surrounding wish-making: If you tell someone your wish, it won’t come true.
Research conducted in the PEAR libratory suggests that, instead of keeping your wish to yourself, you should let others know. The idea behind this – though unable to be tested scientifically – is that the close connection between you and a significant other / best friend will, in fact, increase the brain’s methods of computing data, and in the true heart of synchronicity, increase the likelihood of that wish coming true.
Dynamic, I know.
(either that, or I made all of this up in hopes that my girlfriend would tell me the thing she wishes for the most. I doubt this worked, as she stood over my shoulder the entire time)

I'd not heard of an 11:11 wish before, but I'm certainly happy to have any leg up on how to make a wish that will more likely come true. The time I noticed most when I look at the clock is 4:28. My birthday is 4/28. I wake up a lot at that time.
Posted by: Kim | May 05, 2007 at 10:44 AM
This was such an interesting article. I'd never heard of wishing on 11:11 until I moved to Indiana, and two girls younger than me that I met always talked about it on their MySpace or Xanga, and it wasn't until now that I looked into it, came across your article and figured... why not? I should give it a try. Last time I made a wish was when I was at a Build-A-Bear Workshop; my boyfriend and I both made our wishes on the bear's heart, and after we walked out the store we asked each other our wishes and they ended up being exactly the same. Hehe! :)
But on another note, I used to be real conscious when I looked at the clock, because for a couple of years, I would always chance upon the time 9:11 which always worried me, if something was wrong with me. But anyway, enjoyed reading this! :)

I was just wondering, why do you wish on 11:11. I read that is when angels prompt you to wish. But i dunno. Where did this idea come from?
Posted by: Lyndal | June 11, 2007 at 06:22 AM
Hi all
I just read about the wishing, and I will try it when 11:11 occurs to me. however, noone talks about how it can help you making decisions or warn you at certain moments. the number 1111 appeared to me several times already helping me out when in doubt, it must be a magic combination of numbers. Can anyone tell me about other experiences somehow similar?
lisetlanen@hotmail.com I would love to share ideas.
Posted by: liset | July 04, 2007 at 04:16 PM
a wish made at 11:11 is not magic at all, although many of mine have come true. i feel as if my current boyfirend is the result of a successful wish. but really when you think about it wishes don't come true because of magic they come true from you wanting something so badly that you're willing enough to put yourself out there. wishing doesnt make things happen. they are just fun to believe in. you going out there and working for something that you care enough about to make a wish for, that's when hopes and dreams become a reality. you can't just sit around and wait for your dreams to come true, you have to make them come true.
Posted by: Kristin | July 16, 2007 at 08:20 PM
thanks kristin. ruin everything. wishing means willpower, but we're all trying to feel like there is some kind of force larger than us. One that helps us out when we wish for things, not just on 11:11 but every shooting star, coin in a fountain, or eyelash that falls upon our hand. Wishing is a positive thing that keeps us hopeful and sane. It's more than just a 'fun thing'.
Posted by: Victoria | July 16, 2007 at 08:26 PM
victoria. :D
maybe you're right.
maybe it's a combination of both our thoughts. you want to think there is some force larger than you i'm all for that. maybe it's that force that makes you go and put yourself out there which is something you normally wouldn't do. either way you are the one making your wish come true, because things don't just get handed to you. life is not a movie where everything is perfect. it's real. and if wishing is the only thing keeping you sane i recommend you seek help. wishing is hopeful tinking, hoping for a better tomorrow. i love making wishes don't get me wrong, but believeing that they will come true with some sort of magic, that's just something i won't do.
this is a site for you to comment with your thoughts about wishing. that's what i did.i will put my faith in the person making the wish and you can continue to put your faith in your wishes.good luck.
Posted by: Kristin | July 16, 2007 at 08:38 PM
oh i said you ruined everything because you are one of my bestfriends and i love to tease you. i dont mean litterally we'd all go insane if we didnt wish, but it is nice to think there is something more. If we were all stuck with "crap" we'd probably though, all give up. Wishing and hoping gives us positive opportunity and makes us altogether happier.
Posted by: Victoria | July 16, 2007 at 08:41 PM
i just don't believe that you need to make wishes to make you happier. and i can see that we're never going to see eye to eye on this.
Posted by: Kristin | July 16, 2007 at 08:46 PM
i didnt say that either thought kristin. Some people do thought. You just dont know everyone's situation and mental stableness, but ive heard of situations that i would think wishful thinking is necassary, but i dont think everyone needs it. It's just that I do think it adds to the joy. :D
Posted by: Victoria | July 16, 2007 at 08:50 PM
uhmm.. it kinda looks like you did say that. you said.. "makes us altogether happier." hm. maybe i misunderstood you.yes in some situations i do believe that it can help. mind over matter. and i wasn't saying that my thoughts apply to everyone and all of their situations, because to think that is ignorant. every has a different situaion just like everyone will have a different view.and yes, i agree that it adds to the joy hence why i said in my first post it's fun and that i enjoy to do it.
Posted by: Kristin | July 16, 2007 at 08:56 PM
like we talked about before. i said happiER. not happy altogether. If i said something makes someone happy that would imply that they werent before. i said it adds to the joy. If you have no joy then it would make you specifically happy because you dont know everyone's circumastances but i didnt say everyone happy. i said happier.
Posted by: Victoria | July 16, 2007 at 08:58 PM
you did say altogether happier. i took it right from you're thing. i'm tired and i don't feel like arguing on something neither of us will change our position on. if you want we can argue in the morning on AIM i feel kinda bad for this guy's site.

I was recently reading a bulletin post that my cousin had posted on MySpace. It was one of the usual MySpace bulletins with a survey. This one, however, caught my eye. One of the questions read, "Do you wish on 11:11?" This struck me as interesting, because although I'd never heard of "wishing on 11:11," I've always had a thing with 11:11. I always notice it on clocks. When I was a kid I suffered from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and one of my compulsive behaviors was not being able to go to sleep until my clock read 11:11.
So I went to Google and searched for "wish on 11:11" and came across this post.
Maybe there is something to this superstition, or maybe 11:11 is just a number that the human psyche is drawn to as it is a pattern, and it is a natural tendency for humans to search for patterns in all things. Either way, it's still pretty interesting.

Hello All,
I've been seeing 11:11 since 1978 and have always felt it to be a source of great wisdom and direction. There's far more to it than it simply being a wishing phenomenon. It's spiritual energy being communicated to us from on-high and there are more and more people being awakened to its message and power. Please everyone GOOGLE it and read all you can on it. It's WAY COOL!
The fact that all of you are tuned in to it is wonderful!

Wow.. re-reading my sentence do you notice
there are four i's in the sentence?
Aswell as one one. 1+1=2 = even.
1 & 1 = 11.
11 x 11 = 121
1 + 2 + 1 = 4
4 divided equally = 2
two divded equally = 1.
which takes us back..
=)

okay, i firmly started to believe nin 11:11 only not long ago, after hearing others talk about it and i didn't know a thing about it.
i googled it up, read what i could and myself, being a very easily persuaded person thought this thing might be true.
the thing that makes me sound really shit at life, is that i actually did wait for 11:11, example, when it was 11:00, i'd wait.
i've been wishing for the same thing for about maybe a couple weeks, and i got my wish, but in a twisted way.
a great example of "be careful what you wish for"
to make it more specific, i wished for a particular guy to like me, after several complicated msituations between myself and him, and well, the end result ? another guy with the same name that i ahvent spoken to in a little while has now started to smother me with text messages, and emails, etc.
not cooll.
but this 11:11 thing is probaly the first thing tht i actually really belive in, with no douvbts.

it is 11:14p.m. i made my wish. i looked away for what i thought was at least a minute. but it didn't work. i looked back at 11:13. bummer! for some reason when i was making the wish, i felt some sort of dissiness feeling. like my wish might have actually came true:)

hey, thanks for that. i made my 11:11 wish yesterday and was rather confused at when or how my wish would come true...
i did however look back whilst it was 11:11 && 11:12...
did i jeopardise my wish?

one of them came trueh haa yeah & so i belive in them, but you have to do it right! it should realy be serious though.
one time i wished & i didn't even relize it was 11:11. that stuff is more likely to come true.

I have been seeing 1111 since the early ninetys. I have always been on guard that day more than any day of the year, since i am in Law Enforcement. November 11 has been my most safe day. Today 6/10/2008 is the first time i have ever heard of the wish thing. Years back when service Merchandise was in Business i took notice during a fathers day sales add of mens watches. All the watches displayed 11:11 , this blew me away . I guess some one was expereincing the same phenom in the add section. I thought of googling out of a conversation at work where i was discussing why the Miyan Calendar ends December 21,2012. The fact that there are so many with this ailment is reassuring. November 11 has also been Veterans day throught out the years. So i thought maybe it had something to do with all the souls who have paid the ultimate price? Either way i will keep researching it, i feel so relieved there are others, i have been looked at like i was crazy many times.

I first saw the 11:11 thing in a question on myspace. I'd never heard of it and usually don't see the clock at 11:11 so I'm probably out of luck but I notice 7:17 my birthday at least once a day, usually both times. I've never made a wish on it though, I just kept expecting something weird or major to happen besides my birthday since I always notice it. I'm definitely gonna try it though.

Ok, I did it....I wished for an old boyfriend to come to work and see me and I stated his first and last name (I work at a hospital), today a guy with the same first and last name got admitted that's never been a patient here before....is fate screwing with me or what!!!!!!!! Technically, I guess I got my wish but I see next time to be as specific as possible.
Posted by: Deb | June 15, 2008 at 07:38 PM
I'm always seeing the clock at 1:11... in fact, I'm always seeing the number 111 every where. I got together with my boyfriend on January 11th.
When reading a book I always stop reading/notice page number on 111 when I haven't been keeping track. haha.
And I took a blood pressure test about a week ago, and the reading for my pulse was 111 beats per minute... I was fully relaxed and had been resting for the 20 minutes leading up to the event... 111 is extremely high for a resting pulse.. is it not?

My personal experience with the time "11:11" is it feels in some ways I prayed to a higher power. I know this sounds strange and, I'm not an overly religious person but, every time I make a wish it seems as if I spoke to God.
Posted by: jh | October 12, 2008 at 11:21 AM
Research history.. 11 hour of the 11th day of the 11th month what happened at this time?
Now who wouldn't want to make a wish or a prayer at this time?
Posted by: Andy | November 11, 2008 at 02:08 PM
I've been wishing on 11:11 for ages...before I even knew it was a common superstition. Before I even knew what a superstition was.
I'm not sure whether or not it works, since my wish can't be met until I actually work up the nerve to take the first few steps. My second wish, I won't know until it's broken. I don't make any other wishes than those two things. Too many, I think, make one seem needy, whiny, and helpless.
Posted by: Kitty O | January 25, 2009 at 10:21 PM
11:11 works for me also.
but i don't believe the "you have to look up at 11:12, and its really never been a problem for me.
Posted by: jamie | February 08, 2009 at 09:53 PM
I believe in 11:11. But i don't believe in 2:22 or 3:33 or anything else. I believe you can only make one wish and you cannot tell the wish to anyone at all under any circumstances or else the wish will not come true, in fact the wish will swing the other way!
Posted by: Jadine | February 10, 2009 at 04:31 PM
9-11 appears everywhere for me too
Posted by: chris | February 22, 2009 at 08:07 AM
I am a true believer in 11:11. I am not a full superstitious person, but after 3 years of wishing fervently for something dear to my heart, it came true. And not only did it come true, it's held true. If one small step in the whole sequence of events came out of place leading up to making it come true, it would not have.
Now I'm not saying that something magical happened when I wished at 11:11. Perhaps it was the power of destiny or whatever, but I like to think wishing made it happen.
Posted by: Crystal | April 06, 2009 at 12:22 PM
placebo effect. its not necessarily a wish coming true, but maybe something inevitable, are you wishing for the obscure or for things that could happen. However it is a good way to keep your hopes and inhibitions in the right place.:) i don't to wish my wish has already come true. well enjoy your benevolent wishes!

I have been waking up in the middle of the night since 1981 to see the clock turn 333. Also this number arrives in my life all to often. I thought I was the only one being haunted by numbers, I'm glad to know I'm not but 11:11 sounds like a good number while 333 seems some what off to me. It has gotten very spooky at time. My alarm clock will sometimes go off at 333 when it was definitely not set for that time. I don't understand it.

I read this, being a suspicious person wondering about the magic of 11:11 wish making. This gives hope to many, or jus clarifies what some believe, and wether they want to join the believers or nay sayers. I absolutely enjoyed reading this tho. Sadly I don't believe that any of the wishes I've made have come true. Reading this and seeing that many peoples wishes have come true tho makes me still believe. I hope I can get my wish soon. Lately, a whole load of wishes I have made at any time on 11:11 have come true.
Realistic ones, of course, ones that could just make my day a little bit better etc. Sometimes, every now and then I make a wish I expect not to come true. It's weird because I have found that a lot of those came true one way or another...
But I have never followed any of your rules, I've waited, then repeated the wish in my head over and over until the time is complete, then I don't make any other wishes. If I make two wishes, I cancel each other out, so I don't. Or I cancel a wish out and make another.
I think about the things to do with wishful thinking as well, but it doesn't make sense when I wish for other people to do things, does it?
I once wished that someone I had been having a huge fight with would find me at lunch time and hug me, then ask for my forgiveness.
Oddly enough, it happened.
Sure, I could be making all of this up. But I know what I'm talking about :)
A little bit of magic should happen somehow, right? I believe so.

I have started noticing 11:11 on my clocks many number of times recently. But I never knew about wishing when u see it. Now that I know this, I doubt if I would ever see it again ...

Believing the 11:11 wish is the magic in itself. If you constantly make a single wish it seems to help you build up the courage to make that wish come true. (If it's something reasonable along the lines of 'I want to go out with that guy' or 'I really need to pick up the game in all my classes')
It helps you cast off your doubts on whatever situation you are making the wish about and strive to make it come true.
That's what I think.

I wrote a book about 11:11, a simple story about a watchmaker and about the wishing year. I wanted to give origin to the legend. There is also a fearful version and I wanted to give parents another option. www.pagesbycrystal.weebly.com

The 11:11 wish is truly amazing. I made one the other day, and it was of somehing that i have wanted so bad in the past few months. Sadly, though when i looked back upon the clock, it was still 11:11

The fact that you have been lead to this number sequence is by no means a coincidence. I and millions around the globe are experiencing this phenomenon. You should check out this site for a more detailed description of what this experience means and how it relates to you, and all of humanity. I have strong faith in God, or a higher being, or whatever you want to call it, but as I've seen, and it's been indisputibaly proven to me that that thing, being, or entity that most people call God, is nothing more that pure energy. //www.sacredscribes.net/angelnumbersequences.htmg up to, relizing that this energy, is us.

I've been seeing 11 11 for many years but never heard this theory until right now. I'm elated since I've always felt it meant something powerful but always thought that something horrible was going to happen to me on that day. I huge weight has just been lifted off me. Barb

I will wish for the same thing for the rest of my life. Until ir comes true. I am in love, I hope he loves me as well... well I wish he does. I am in love. I want to marry him. I had a dream about him come true before. A dream where he asked me to slow dance and it happened. The night? the night he asked me was 11.11.11 <3

I read that you are supposed to look back at the clock while it still reads 11:11. That if you look back and the clock reads 11:12 already, then the wish doesn't count...
Which is correct?
